Web Site AccessibilityMost web sites are designed with a general market in mind. If your target market includes the elderly or physically-challenged, you may be losing some potential customers. They may have trouble reading the text if it's too small or its color is too similar to the background. There are many potential customers online who are color-blind, have impaired sight or use special browsers designed to overcome a handicap. While programs that write HTML for web sites usually offers ALT labels for images, which describe what the image contains, they don't provide any other solutions for accessibility. They don't check color combinations to make sure the color-blind can read text. They don't ensure that text is large enough to be easily read by the sight-impaired. They don't supply the labels needed by specialized browsers for the impaired. Because at Penweb we write all code by hand, we can create web sites that can be understood by many more people than those created by programs. It takes more time and costs a little more money to create a site this way, but for some of you it may be money very well spent. If you'd like an estimate of what it would cost to make your existing site accessible, please send a message to info@penweb.net to let us know. Back to Front Page |
